Mengadaptasi novel populer ke layar lebar memang tidaklah mudah. Begitu yang tampak pada film Perahu Kertas, meski yang mengadaptasi jadi skenario Dewi “Dee” Lestari yang tiada lain adalah penulisnya juga. Adapun, Hanung Bramantyo, sutradaranya, harus ekstra lebih keras, lebih cerdas, untuk dapat menyelaraskan proses adaptasi itu agar visualisasi-nya berjalan dengan baik dan lancar. Sehingga sejalan dengan imajinasi pembaca (baca: penggemar) novel Perahu Kertas. Sedangkan, penonton yang belum membaca novel tersebut mendapat sesuatu gambaran kisah yang gamblang dan utuh.

 

Sebagaimana judul film yang disandangnya ‘Perahu Kertas’, film ini mengajak kita untuk “berlayar” menemui tokoh-tokoh utamanya, yakni Kugy dan Keenan. Keduanya memperlihatkan jalinan keromantisan seperti film drama romantis pada umumnya. Hanya saja, karakter Kugy, unik, bahkan bisa dibilang cenderung eksentrik. Justru karena eksentrik itulah yang membuat Keenan tertarik karena menemukan sosok perempuan lain daripada perempuan pada umumnya.

 

Kugy dan Keenan dipertemukan oleh pasangan Eko dan Noni. Eko adalah sepupu Keenan, sementara Noni adalah sahabat Kugy sejak kecil. Kecuali Noni, mereka semua hijrah dari Jakarta, lalu kuliah di universitas yang sama di Bandung.Mereka berempat bersahabat karib.

 

Kugy dan Keenan, yang saling mengagumi, saling jatuh cinta tapi tanpa pernah sempat mengungkapkan. Kondisinya tidak memungkinkan. Kugy sudah punya kekasih: Joshua, alias Ojos. Sementara Keenan dicomblangkan oleh Noni dan Eko dengan seorang kurator muda bernama Wanda.

 

Persahabatan empat sekawan mulai merenggang. Kugy menjadi guru relawan di sekolah darurat bernama Sakola Alit. Di sanalah ia bertemu dengan Pilik, muridnya paling nakal, yang ia taklukkan dengan cara menuliskan dongeng tentang kisah petualangan mereka sendiri, yang diberi judul Jenderal Pilik dan Pasukan Alit. Dongeng ini diberikan kepada Keenan.

 

Kedekatan Keenan dengan Wanda pun berubah. Impian Keenan kandas. Ia pergi ke Ubud, tinggal di rumah sahabat ibunya, Pak Wayan. Masa-masa bersama keluarga Pak Wayan mulai mengobati luka hati Keenan. Sosok yang paling berpengaruh dalam penyembuhannya adalah Luhde Laksmi, keponakan Pak Wayan. Keenan mulai bisa melukis lagi. Berbekalkan kisah-kisah Jenderal Pilik dan Pasukan Alit yang diberikan Kugy padanya, Keenan menciptakan lukisan serial yang menjadi terkenal dan diburu para kolektor.

 

Lulus kuliah Kugy langsung bekerja di sebuah biro iklan di Jakarta sebagai copywriter. Di sana, ia bertemu dengan Remigius, atasannya sekaligus sahabat abangnya. Kugy meniti karier dengan cara tak terduga-duga. Pemikirannya yang ajaib dan serba spontan membuat ia melejit menjadi orang yang diperhitungkan di kantor itu. Remi melihat sesuatu yang lain. Ia menyukai Kugy bukan hanya karena ide-idenya, tapi juga semangat dan kualitas unik yang senantiasa terpancar dari Kugy. Dan akhirnya Remi harus mengakui bahwa ia mulai jatuh hati. Ketulusan Remi meluluhkan hati Kugy.

 

Karena kondisi kesehatan ayahnya yang memburuk, Keenan terpaksa kembali ke Jakarta, menjalankan perusahaan keluarganya karena tidak punya pilihan lain. Pertemuan antara Kugy dan Keenan tidak terelakkan. Bahkan empat sekawan ini bertemu lagi. Semuanya dengan kondisi yang sudah berbeda. Dan kembali hati mereka diuji.

 

Serangkaian kisah-kisah yang sebenarnya cukup menghanyutkan penonton. Sayangnya, baik aktris Maudy Ayunda yang berperan sebagai Kugy, maupun aktor Adipati Dolken yang menjadi Keenan, belum mampu melebur diri pada perannya masing-masing. Bahkan keduanya tampak kurang mampu menjalin chemistry yang semestinya terjadi laiknya sepasang kekasih. Maudy tampaknya belum mampu menjawab keeksentrikan karakter Kugy yang dibangun Dewi “Dee” Lestari. Atau, jangan-jangan mesti Dewi sendiri yang semestinya memvisualisasikan tokoh eksentrik rekaannya.

 

Meski demikian, kita tetap patut memberi apresiasi pada Maudy Ayunda maupun Adipati Dolken yang sudah membumikan kisah dari novel bahasa literer penuh imajinasi ke labar lebar sinematografi untuk mendekatkan pada kisah nyata keseharian.

 

Terlepas dari kelemahan, kita masih bisa menikmati suguhan film yang cukup menghibur dengan cerita “beda” dan menyegarkan. Film produksi Starvision Plus, Bentang Pictures dan
